How a one-way rental works here
The mechanics are straightforward. You set Tirana Airport as the pickup and choose a different drop-off, and the search page only shows you cars that actually allow that exact route. Most suppliers charge a one-way fee for the privilege, because someone on their team has to ferry the car back; that fee lands in the price before you commit, so there is nothing to argue about at the desk.
Distance drives the cost. Returning the car in central Tirana, 17 km up the SH2 from arrivals, is cheap or sometimes free. Dropping it in Durres, 40 minutes away, costs a little more. Leaving it down in Saranda, the better part of three hours south past the Llogara pass, costs more again, because that car has a long trip home. We would say this plainly: weigh the fee against the petrol and the hours you save by not driving back.
One honest caveat. Not every supplier offers a one-way return, and the ones who do may not cover every town. So treat the drop-off selector as a filter, not a guarantee. Set both ends of the trip first, and you will only ever see cars that can do what you are actually asking.

Land late, drive the 17 km into town, and hand the car back in the centre when you leave. The shortest leg, so often the cheapest one-way fee, if any.
TIA to Durres
About 40 minutes to the closest beach. Useful if you are starting on the coast and flying home from Tirana later, or the other way round.
TIA to Saranda
The classic south run: roughly 2h45 down to the Ionian, Ksamil and the Riviera. Drop it there and skip the long drive back north.
Before you set a one-way drop-off
A few things make this smoother. First, ask the value question early: on a longer rental, some suppliers waive the one-way fee entirely, so a seven-day hire to Saranda can work out the same as picking up and dropping in the same spot. It pays to compare both ways on the search page.
Second, mind the gearbox. Albania runs more manuals than automatics, and the automatic pool on a one-way leg is smaller still. If you want an automatic for the coast road, filter for it and book ahead rather than gambling on what is left in August.
Third, keep the return realistic. If your one-way plan involves crossing into Greece or Montenegro and leaving the car abroad, that is a cross-border return and a different conversation: it needs the supplier's written permission and a Green Card. Arrange that before you pay, not at the airport.

How much does a one-way drop-off cost?

Can I fly out of a different airport after a one-way rental?
Albania's main scheduled airport is Tirana (TIA), so most visitors still fly home from there. If you are crossing into a neighbour and flying out of, say, Corfu or Podgorica, that is a cross-border return and needs the supplier's written permission and a Green Card; ask before you book.
Is a one-way rental more expensive overall?
Not always. You pay a one-way fee, but you save the cost and the hours of driving the car back to where you started. For a land-at-the-airport, work-south, fly-home trip, a one-way booking is usually the cheaper and saner option than a round trip.
When should I lock in a one-way booking?
Earlier than a standard rental, especially in July and August. One-way cars on popular routes are a smaller pool, and automatics in that pool sell out first, so book a few weeks ahead for summer pickups rather than turning up and hoping.
