The city itself is compact and quick to cross, with Blloku, the old communist-era enclave turned bar-and-cafe district, as the lively middle. You will not spend long getting anywhere inside the ring. The catch is standing still: on-street parking in the centre is tight and informal, so we steer people toward a paid lot or, better, a hotel that includes parking. Arrange that before you arrive and the car becomes an asset rather than a daily headache.
Traffic has a rhythm worth respecting. Lane discipline is loose, scooters filter from everywhere, and the morning and early-evening peaks around the centre are slow. None of it is dangerous at city speed; you just drive defensively and leave a margin. If your hotel has parking, the honest move is to leave the car there for the days you are exploring Tirana on foot and only take it out for trips beyond the city.

Hiring a car in Tirana: your questions
Should I pick the car up in the centre or at the airport?
Most visitors collect at the airport, since they land at TIA anyway and the SH2 brings them into Tirana in 25 to 30 minutes. A city-centre pickup makes sense if you arrive by bus or are already staying a few nights without a car. Both options show on the search step; set the one that matches your plan.
Is parking in central Tirana a problem?
On-street space around Blloku and the centre is genuinely tight, so we tell people to budget for a paid lot or to book a hotel that has its own parking. Once that is arranged the city is small and easy to drive; it is leaving the car overnight that catches people out.
Do I need a deposit to hire a car in Tirana?
Most cars here come with no security deposit held on your card. Use the no-deposit filter on the search page to show only those, which keeps a large card hold off your account during the trip. A few larger or premium cars still hold a deposit, and that is always stated before you book.
How far is the coast if I am based in Tirana?
Durres and its beach are about 40 minutes via the SH4, which makes it an easy afternoon. The Albanian Riviera further south is a longer day, so for that we usually suggest an early start rather than a there-and-back evening run.
Can I get an automatic in Tirana?
Yes, though automatics are fewer than manuals across Albania and the cheaper ones sell out first in July and August. If you only drive automatic, book early and use the gearbox filter rather than turning up and hoping one is free.
What do I need to bring to collect the car?
Your driving licence (held a year or two), a passport or ID, and a card in the main driver's name. Licences not written in the Latin alphabet may need an International Driving Permit alongside the original.
