Car hire in Durres

Durres is the nearest sea to Tirana, a long sandy Adriatic strip about 40 minutes from the capital on the SH4 and 30 to 40 minutes from the airport, the easiest beach to reach the day you land. Use it as a base for the whole central coast, from €27/day.

No deposit and free cancellation on most cars. You compare live prices from local suppliers on the next step.

Why Durres works as a base

We rate Durres less for the strip itself, which is built up and packed in peak season, and more for where it puts you. It is Albania's main port and the closest coast to the capital, so the SH4 dual carriageway gets you back into Tirana in around 40 minutes. You sleep by the sea and still have the city, the airport, and the central beaches all within an easy drive.

In town there is a genuinely good Roman amphitheatre, one of the larger ones on the Adriatic, a short walk from the centre. It is the kind of thing you see in an hour between a morning swim and lunch, and a car means you are not timing your day around buses to do it.

One honest warning: in July and August the beach road is slow and parking near the front is a fight. We would take the smallest car that fits your group, park once, and walk the promenade. Outside high summer none of that applies and the drive over from the airport is a quiet half hour.

Drives from Durres, roughly

From the airport

Tirana Airport (TIA) to the Durres beach strip is about 30 to 40 minutes. From arrivals you take the airport road onto the SH4 west, so you can land and be on the sand the same afternoon.

Into Tirana

The SH4 dual carriageway links Durres and the capital in roughly 40 minutes. Easy to sleep by the sea and spend a day in the city, or do it the other way around.

Down the coast

Durres sits at the top of the central beaches. Carry on south for the longer Adriatic sands, then the Riviera further on. A car is the only sensible way to string those together.

Durres car hire: your questions

How far is Durres from Tirana Airport?

About 30 to 40 minutes. From TIA you join the airport road and pick up the SH4 dual carriageway west to the coast, so a lot of people skip the capital entirely and drive straight to the beach on arrival. Having the car at the airport means you do that on your own clock, not a taxi's.

Is it worth hiring a car if I am only staying in Durres?

If you never leave the beach strip, you can manage on foot. But most people who book Durres also want a day in Tirana, a run down the coast, or the Roman sites in town, and the SH4 makes the capital a 40-minute hop. A car turns a one-beach trip into a base for the whole central coast.

Where do I pick the car up in Durres?

Your local supplier confirms the exact meeting point on your voucher, usually near your accommodation on the beach strip or in the town centre. If you are flying in, collecting at Tirana Airport (TIA) and driving over on the SH4 is often simpler than arranging a coastal handover.

Do I need a deposit to hire a car for Durres?

Most cars here come with no security deposit held on your card. Use the no-deposit filter on the search page to show only those. Some larger or automatic cars may still ask for one, and it is always stated up front, never sprung on you at handover.

Is the beach road in Durres easy to drive?

The strip gets genuinely busy in July and August, with slow traffic and tight parking near the front. It is nothing technical, just patience and a smaller car if you can. Outside high summer it is calm. Plan to park once and walk the promenade rather than crawling along it.

Can I drop the car off somewhere other than Durres?

Often yes. A one-way drop at the airport, in Tirana, or further down the coast is usually available for a fee, and the price updates on the search step before you commit. Set your drop-off there so there are no surprises.
